USARA has three levels of membership Regular, Associate, and Affiliate Regular membership is open to Tabbed and Scrolled Rangers. Scroll Rangers must meet the criteria outlined on our website at: https://ranger.org/join.

USARA does not maintain the list of Ranger School graduates or rosters of soldiers who served in a Ranger Unit, therefore cannot verify the legitimacy of someone being a Ranger. Remember, to join USARA, applicants must provide proof of eligibility to join.

Unfortunately, often this question arises. If you are trying to aid someone to recover the proof of their Ranger status (Tabbed or Scrolled), this can be done by contacting the National Archives on-line at https://www.va.gov/records/get-military-service-records/ and follow the instructions to order replacement DD214 documents.

Alternatively, verification of Ranger School graduation can be done through the U S Army Ranger School on-line by going on-line to 20230511 Signed BDE Student Status and Tab Check MFR.pdf. Follow the instructions as outlined in paragraph 5. Ranger School permanently maintains the student records/grade sheets since the school started in the early 1950’s (the records have not been lost/destroyed).

However, if you are concerned that someone is posing as a Ranger verification can be done, but may need to be done surreptitiously:

    1. Asking ‘the Ranger’ for their class number, after getting the Class number do an on-line search for the class photo and ask the ‘Ranger’ to point themselves out; found on-line at Ranger School Graduation Gallery-Downloads. Almost everybody remembers their class number (it is a significant emotional event). Note: Class numbers include a class number and year; and unfortunately, there are not photos for every class!
    2. If you want to be sly about it, offer a gift of a one-year USARA membership to become a Regular member ‘the Ranger’ will need to submit a copy of his DD214, or verification of earning the Ranger Tab, or proof of service in a Ranger unit. If ‘the Ranger’ is legit it will cost you $30, but at least you will know that person is legit.
    3. USARA does not determine the units that fall within the lineage of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Those designations are made by the US Army’s Institute of Heraldry, and currently include the following:

      1. Any of the World War II Ranger Battalions,
      2. The 5307th Composite Unit also known as “Merrills Marauders” during WWII,
      3. The Alamo Scouts during WII,
      4. Any of the Ranger Infantry Companies (Airborne) during the Korean Warr,
      5. The Eight Army’s “8000 Series” unit during the Korean War,
      6. Any Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Ranger Unit (Biet Dong Quan),
      7. Any officially designated U.S. Army Ranger unit to include E/65th Inf (PRNG), D/151st Inf (IN NG), A/75th and B/75th Ranger (V and VII Corps LRP) or their immediate predecessor units, and
      8. The 1st or 2nd Ranger Battalion during the period 1974-1984 (pre-Regimental activation era).

    3. If ‘the Ranger’ claims to be a Scroll Ranger and nontabbed you can still offer to pay for a USARA membership, ‘the Ranger’ will still be required to verify eligibilitybut, in this instance provide a copy of orders reflecting assignment to one of the historical Ranger lineage units. Note: If the ‘Ranger’ is a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment Association, they are legit since the applicant had to provide proof of eligibility for membership and the names of 2 members to vouch for him.
